What is a first-then board?
A first-then board shows a two-step sequence: what happens first, followed by what happens then. You can use photographs, drawings, symbols, objects or written words, depending on what the person understands and prefers.
For example, a board might show “wash hands” followed by “snack”, or “coat” followed by “outside”. The two pictures show the plan; the words alone do not have to carry all the information.
Plan two steps that belong together
- Choose a small part of the day. Start with a sequence that already happens and can be shown accurately.
- Choose the visuals together. Check that each picture means the intended activity to the person using it.
- Keep the labels short. “Wash hands” is easier to scan than a long instruction.
- Show both steps. Point out what is happening now and what follows, using the person’s usual communication style.
- Keep the board truthful. If the second activity is not available or the plan changes, explain and update it.
Use the board to communicate a plan and make space for the person’s choices. Do not use it to withhold essential needs or override an established communication or support plan.
When two steps are not enough
A first-then board can be too small for a routine with several important parts. If the person needs to see shoes, coat and bag before leaving, a three-step visual schedule may describe the sequence more accurately.
SnapThen boards can contain 2–5 steps. Keep each board focused on one activity. You can create a separate routine for another part of the day and reuse saved photos when needed.

Different people may prefer a phone, tablet, printed board or another visual format. Use the format that suits the person and setting, and follow any advice already agreed with their support team.
Questions people often ask
Does “then” have to be a reward?
The board can simply show what follows. It does not have to make one activity conditional on earning another. Choose a use that respects the person’s communication, choices and needs.
Can I use a two-step board without audio?
Yes. Recorded audio and labels are optional in SnapThen. A familiar photo can be the main cue.
Does this replace AAC?
SnapThen is a visual routine tool that can sit alongside AAC. It is not an AAC system or therapy service and does not replace specialist advice.
